Punk is not for everyone. I like him as a performer, but there is definitely something irritating and “unearned” about how he holds himself as a performer. I like guys taking themselves seriously. But it’s like Punk thinks he is a draw when he has been responsible for moving numbers maybe twice.

Wasn't talking about you in the quoted post. But your initial criticism in this instance holds no weight. He wasn't being two-faced because you don't need to tell everyone "HEY I TOOK THIS FROM BRET HART." He was asked (or berated apparently) and explained what he did. That simple.

my overall take on punk is better late than never. you can't deny that he brings established appeal and match quality to the table, but i'm sure even he would admit that his status has diminished as a result of his extended hiatus from pro wrestling, to where he is not quite the needle-mover he once was. wrestling has changed a ton in his absence. mma w/l record doesn't really hold any weight, not sure why cumdorx has to make that argument, or why there's any reason to hate, when hate carries such a strong connotation and considering you can still stomach watching his matches


that being said, i look forward to seeing perhaps the only penta match i have given a FUCK about in forever tonight. a fresh match that i really don't know what to expect from either guy in terms of chemistry, story, anything really. it is yet another one of those matches that could have been actually booked better but we're just seeing it for the sake of a good paper card on free weekly tv. by the way, was really surprised/relieved that there are no stupid, meaningless and unnecessary gimmick matches for dynamite tonight. huzzah!

I don’t know why people are allergic to this take. A wrestler’s credibility is very important. Punk has definitely lost a lot of “what if” mystique by taking UFC fights and getting his ass handed to him. You have to work harder to suspend your disbelief. This makes it harder for things to work.

I know people who know Punk by the shitty horror film and don’t take him seriously because of that. What you do outside wrestling does matter.

From what I'm to ascertain, there's lots of "hypocrisy" and "homerism" in the AEW versus WWE battle. In that the collective "we" ignores the shortcomings of AEW while complaining about the same things in WWE.

Also, apparently everyone "rides" Noid for criticizing AEW without watching it while many of us criticize WWE without watching it. This is from an inside source, close to the action.

He THEN tried to get WWE to take him back again, and again WWE turned him down.

Whilst I think there are certain communities (particularly AEW's sub-Reddit, which I seldom visit on account of Reddit being a toilet) who are brainwashed drones acting like the company is perfect, I think most people are fairly reasonable in their critiques. Especially during the in-show threads here.

I don't think AEW's shortcomings are ignored like they aren't there inasmuch as the regular AEW viewers here are willing to give those things a pass because the show is overall enjoyable. I certainly have my gripes but it's nothing "gamebreaking" for me and hopefully remains that way.

I don't feel like my time is wasted watching AEW, and at the end of the day, with a litany of entertainment options available, we shouldn't watch shit that makes us feel like we're wasting time that could be spent on things we enjoy.

You can argue that when he’s said some of these things that he wasn’t talking in absolutes. I don’t know if he ever said he’d never wrestle again. His comments about Bret Hart were just weird, lol. But the interesting ones to me are about him and the early relationship with AEW/crawling back into bed with WWE.

My understanding is that AEW dicked him (because they are morons/possible some were threatened), but I did hear he tried to get back into the WWE. I didn’t believe they would say no to him, but when you think about what a headache he must have been (WWE were trying to push him for years before the pipe-bomb) and they probably knew they’d get no return off their investment, I tend to believe it now.

Punk’s not a draw. He’s kind of a Trojan horse you can let go to a rival and watch them get nothing out of him.

A lot of people say “AEW isn’t perfect” as a cover for their partisanship. “AEW isn’t perfect, I’ll be the first to admit that, BUT…” then comes the attack.

This place is getting fairer, it seems. The magic is wearing off. People realize “Eh, this is kind of the shits.” In my opinion, I don’t think the calibrations are completely honest just yet. People are still willing this thing to be better than it actually is. They’ll tell themselves it’s entertaining. Criticism is becoming more commonplace though. Guys like xrod, Lock Jaw, XL, Fignuts, Maluco and even Mr. JL with his rare appearance lately deserve credit for that.

The followers begin to realize “hang on, AEW isn’t perfect” beyond it being the line you can hide behind.

I don’t feel like this covers me. I watch more WWE than AEW every week, and feel like I’m quite “even” in my criticism of the product.

Also, can’t agree with your last assessment. Noid can be a blowhard but his criticisms of AEW hold water a lot of the time. He loses me by going “too far the other way” to create “balance” in the argument. However, he does form his own opinion (usually) and contributes his own thoughts.

On the other hand, xrod spends a lot of time reposting crap from Twitter and Reddit, neither of which are platforms I care for, and making exceptional reaches to criticise Tony Khan and/or Punk. Like, there is a decent amount of stuff you can legitimately criticise AEW for (too much garbage wrestling, too much blood, etc), that you shouldn’t need to reach that far.

That said, it’s his prerogative to do all of that, and if it brings him joy, let it be.
