Yes and no. There are degrees, and I'm pretty sure she wanted to go full blast. That would have compromised the requisite tone of 'The MCU Movie'. Winter Soldier's political thriller and Guardians' space opera are examples of stretching the formula, but they feel like MCU movies. She was not a good choice. Her interview with Essence give hints of the tonal rift. I don't think she'd have time to showcase elements of the larger universe when she probably wanted to use the movie to make some kind of social point.

I was just talking to Khuntry about the fallout and off the top of my head I named a few directors who could merge Black Panther's cultural themes with the action-comedy, mythology of the MCU. Andy Serkis (already in the movie as the villain) and Neill Blomkamp (perfect choice, imo) were some of the top picks for me. As well as John Singleton and, not even kidding, Tyler Perry. These guys could channel Black Panther's unique themes as well as play ball with MCU's guidelines.
